Mzee Tendere, born Joseph Mwagandi Kiponda, is a multifaceted artist, cultural steward, and a prominent figure within the Mijikenda community
of Kenya. Renowned for his exceptional talent as a master percussionist, vocalist, composer, and Kaya elder. Mzee Tendere has dedicated his life
to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Mijikenda people. His work spans various indigenous music genres, including
Mwanzele, Mavunyo, Msele, Mshago, and Mchechemeko, captivating audiences with the authentic sounds of Mijikenda traditions. He is the
creative director at the Malindi District Cultural Association (MADCA), where he plays a pivotal role in nurturing artistic talent and safeguarding
traditional Mijikenda music, dances, and cultural practices. He is renowned for his prowess as a percussionist and his mastery of traditional
instruments such as the Mshondo, Chapuo, Ndema, and Kayamba.
